You know all those cute burlap triangle banners people display in their homes or at parties? Well I think they're adorable. And I wanted a Fall one for my mantle. Being the cheap-o that I am, I didn't want to purchase one for $40 off of Etsy. I stared long and hard at a picture of the banner and finally realized after modifying this tutorial, "hey, I can make that". It probably won't look as perfect, but I think it's worth a shot. I am happy to report that it is incredibly easy and fun to make. Here's a quick little tutorial to make a burlap banner for your home!
Supplies:
1 yard of burlap, ironed if wrinkled
Pennant template, click here
Sharpie
Scissors
Hot glue gun
Letter stencils
Paint
Twine
Directions:
1. Cut out the pennant template and trace it onto the burlap for each letter on the banner. In my case, I needed 11 pennants. Cut out the pennants.
2. Stencil one letter on each pennant with a Sharpie.
3. Fill in each letter with paint. Black paint is the easiest because it will cover up any Sharpie that would have shown through. White paint will work as well, but you will need more coats to cover the Sharpie. Let the paint completely dry.
4. Cut your twine. The length will depend on how long your mantle, how many pennants you will have, and how much slack you want. Measure your mantle and cut your twine accordingly.
5. Space out your pennants over the twine to get an idea of where they will be placed. Next, flip each pennant over so the letter is facing down, and place your twine over it. Fold the top 1/2 inch of the banner down and secure with 3 dots of hot glue. Trim the sides of the folded over piece so you don't have any burlap sticking out (see image below).
Easy peasy!
I love it, you did a great job. :)

ReplyDeleteThat is so good. I wish I was crafty but I'm not.
ReplyDeleteI love it! My sister made one for her wedding since it was rustic themed, and it looked so cute! Sadly I don't think the photographer got any photos of the reception hall.
ReplyDeleteLove it! I've also seen pendants already cut out of burlap for sale at Hobby Lobby - which would make it even easier (but more expensive than doing it completely yourself!) Yours looks great. :)
ReplyDeleteGood job! Oh I've wanted to make one for our daughter's room..maybe I still will. Thank you for the idea!
ReplyDeleteThis is adorable! I have a feeling once I get in my nesting mode, I'll want to start making some for all.the.holidays because why the heck not?! :)
ReplyDeleteSo cute! If there was a contest for the cutest blogger mantle, I'd nominate you!
ReplyDeleteThis is so cute! I hear you on not wanting to spend a lot of $$$ for things on Etsy- especially when you can do it yourself just as well :)
