Recent Reads: July

It's book review day on this little blog! For someone who used to really dread reading, this has become one of my favorite posts to write each month. I love sharing my latest reads and always love hearing suggestions on what to read next. I read 3 really different books this month and enjoyed them all! Here's what occupied my nightstand in July.

Saving CeeCee Honeycutt
by Beth Hoffman

I think this would make an excellent read for middle schoolers. It kind of reminded me of a younger version of The Help. It is set in the 1960s and told from the viewpoint of 12 year old CeeCee Honeycutt, who is mature beyond her years from taking care of her psychotic, ill mother. When tragedy strikes, CeeCee is whisked away to live with her Aunt Tootie and housekeeper, Violene. The array of characters are well developed and the story is sweet, but I felt that it lacked plot twists.

Life Is Beautiful: How A Lost Girl Became A True, Confident Child Of God
by Sarah M Johnson

In this book, Sarah shares her journey of losing her dad and brother in a plane crash. She doesn't sugarcoat the heartbreak she faces and really opens up about her emotions through this journey and her struggle with alcoholism. It's raw and a great reminder of how God works in us, even when we feel like we are at rock bottom. It's an easy read and a worthwhile read. It's amazing how God can use us when we feel completely unusable, and this book was a great illustration of that.

The Making Of A Navy Seal
by Brandon Webb

This book was just plain awesome. Brandon Webb is a Navy Seal Sniper and opens up about his journey to becoming a Navy Seal and experiences in the Middle East. The foreword is written by Marcus Luttrell, author of Lone Survivor (which is another awesome book by the way), who Brandon Webb trained when he came through sniper school. I spent a good 10 minutes telling Parker about this book and finally said "You know what, just read it. You'll love it". I really enjoyed this book. It's a quick read, but it gives us a glimpse into what life is like as an elite Navy Seal Sniper. These guys are the best of the best, and it was cool to live vicariously through Brandon Webb's journey.

I would love to hear your recommendations on what to read next!
